PSSSB Clerk Typing Exam Prep Guide

Master the guidelines, time limits, and mistake calculations for the Punjab Subordinate Services Selection Board clerk tests.

Introduction to PSSSB Typing Tests

To secure recruitment as a Clerk, Clerk IT, or Clerk Accounts under the **Punjab Subordinate Services Selection Board (PSSSB)**, candidates must pass a qualifying typing test. This test is non-competitive (qualifying only), but it is notoriously challenging. Up to **70-80% of candidates fail** due to panic, keyboard variations, or a lack of familiarity with official error calculation formulas.

Official Passing Criteria

Candidates must pass typing tests in **both** English and Punjabi on the same day. Here are the core specifications:

  • Languages: English (standard QWERTY) and Punjabi (Raavi Unicode font).
  • Test Duration: 10 Minutes for each language test.
  • Speed Requirement: Minimum **30 Words Per Minute (WPM)** in both tests.
  • Accuracy Requirement: Minimum **92% Net Accuracy** (i.e. maximum 8% errors allowed).

Mistake Penalties & Speed Calculation

The WPM calculation follows strict Indian government formulas. Typing speed is measured in **Net WPM**:

Gross Words = (Total keystrokes typed / 5)
Net Words = Gross Words - (Uncorrected Mistakes * 10)
Net WPM = Net Words / Time (10 minutes)

Critical Warning: Each uncorrected spelling mistake, punctuation error, or missed space counts as a mistake. In the net speed calculation, **each error penalizes you by deducting 10 words** (or 50 keystrokes) from your total typed count. This is why accuracy is far more important than raw speed. A typist with 40 Gross WPM and 15 mistakes will fail, while a typist with 32 Gross WPM and 2 mistakes will pass!

Interface Rules & Controls

  • Backspace Key: The Backspace key is usually **enabled**, but you can only correct mistakes in the current active word. Once you press space and move to the next word, you cannot return to edit previous words.
  • Scroll Behavior: The text paragraph is displayed on the screen. The box autoscrolls as you type.
  • Font Size: The text size in the official terminal is comfortable (~14-16pt) with standard alignment.
